05/19/2017 - 32 rail cars derailed from a southbound Union Pacific Train just south of Mason City yesterday (Thu.) about 1:30pm. There were no injuries.
Union Pacific says two derailed cars carrying Liquid Petroleum Gas-Butane released vapor from a safety valve, but no leaks were detected.
The train originated in South St. Paul, Minnesota and was traveling to North Platte, Nebraska. It consisted of 146 rail cars carrying mixed freight including sand.
Union Pacific crews are working to clear the derailment site and restore normal operations, but the rain and wet conditions have slowed down the progress.
The derailment, which took place northwest of Rockwell, remains under investigation.
