10/11/2017 - For years the West Fork boys’ cross country team didn’t have to worry about who was going to lead the pack. Jacob Hansen, now a NIACC Trojan cross country runner, showed what hard work and dedication can do, reaching state either as an individual or helping the whole team the previous four years. This fall, the Warhawks weren’t a one hundred percent sure who was taking the top role. Senior Connor Schulz did though and all the running throughout the summer has paid off. The final two regular season meets, Schulz was a top ten finisher, placing 7th at the home meet in Rockwell last Thursday and a week prior, 9th at Mayne’s Grove.
The Warhawks as a team placed 4th at the Hampton Dumont meet and only ran three guys in Rockwell. Schulz hasn’t matched his personal best of 17-minutes and 12 second on either course but the top ten finishers are what’s important. Schulz believes he won’t be the only one running at Fort Dodge later this month.
Before West Fork runs in the state qualifying district meet, the Warhawks will battle for the Top of Iowa Conference Championship Thursday. The East and West Divisions race together on the NIACC Campus in Mason City starting around 3:30pm. Cross Country district meets are next Thursday, October 19th.
