Grundy Center Girls Basketball taking on Nodaway Valley in regional final

The #9 (2A) Grundy Center girls basketball team will play in its first regional final since 2021 when it faces #8 (2A) Nodaway Valley Wednesday at Ballard High School.

At 20-2, the Spartans have had a dominant season, which continued in its 55-13 win over Madrid to begin the postseason. But the offense struggled by hitting only 14.9 percent of shots in Friday’s 38-29 win over South Hamilton. Head Coach Matt Lindeman says it’ll take a similar defensive performance but a much better offensive outing to compete with Nodaway Valley.

“They average mid 60s; We’ve got to keep them in the 40s,” Lindeman says. “Their losses, when they have lost this year, the opposing team has been able to hold them in the 40s. So we’ve got to do that to give ourselves a chance. And we’ve got to be able to find some offensive firepower. They do a great job of collapsing and their defense is really good. We’ve got to be smart. We’ve got to be able to take care of the ball, but we’ve got to be able to find scoring opportunities and be able to knock those down when we have that. And then obviously get to the line. The games that we’ve been able to get to the free throw line more than our opponent has been, you know, obviously really, really good for us. And we’ve got to be able to be aggressive enough and get to that.”

Carlie Willis leads with 12.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

The Wolverines are 20-3, and advanced with a 65-46 win over Interstate 35 and a 93-46 win over Southwest Valley. They boast possibly one of Iowa’s best scoring tandems; Lindsey Davis leads with 25.1 points per game and Izzy Eisbach adds 19.7 per game. Lindeman says it’s a pair of players unlike anything they’ve seen this year.

“Obviously, we’ve faced good competition all year in our conference and out of the conference. We have not faced two potential offensive threats like Nodaway Valley provides. Davis, obviously, is a first-team all-stater last year and returning as a senior and has put up really good numbers. She can basically do it all. She can shoot her off the dribble. She can drive and be able to make contact and get to the basket. And then, Coach’s daughter is a sophomore, does not play like a sophomore. She pushes it really well and kind of runs the show a little bit that way, her and Davis, but loves to be able to get to the lane, finishes really well, has a nice shot, very confident. So they just, you know, do a really good job. Those two provide a lot of offense.”

The game will air on 99 The Wave. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 p.m., followed by the tipoff at 7:00.
