Falcon Girls Hoops finishes season in regional final

The Aplington-Parkersburg girls basketball team had its season end with a 63-35 loss to #1 (2A) Dike-New Hartford in Wednesday’s regional final at Cedar Falls. It was the team’s third straight season appearing in a regional final.

The Falcons seemingly picked up where they left off from a state tournament appearance in 2022-2023, and were ranked most of the season. Most of the wins were decisive, with only six wins being decided by single digits. The five losses were to teams either in the state tournament or in regional finals. Head Coach Brady Driscol says the success of the team is due to a strong culture of winning.

“Credit to the girls, they put in a lot of work in the offseason,” Driscol says. “During the season, they work very very hard. Two seniors led the charge. They’ve done it for four years. My first group of four years, fully of them. Stuck it out, got a lot better as they progressed through their high school years. And you look at the year in total, five losses, three coming to Dike, one to Grundy, which we probably should have had, looking back. And they’re at state, and then Denver. The losses that we had were to state caliber teams and had two of them on the ropes. But proud of the girls for their effort the whole year. It’s my favorite time of the year. It’s a lot of their favorite times of the year, some of them. It’s a credit to just them for wanting to compete and be a part of a team and see success together.”

The Falcons finished 19-5. They’ll graduate two seniors, Kendall Riherd and Lexi Aswegen.
