The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls track and field team utilized the indoor season to help younger group learn the ropes, to be at their best during the outdoor season.
Head Coach Monty Harker says similar to last year the Cowgirls have quality over quantity this season.
“Last year I only had nine runners, and our logo was, I’ll take quality over quantity any day,” says Harker. “This year, we don’t have a huge quantity of girls out for track right now, but I do think that those are out are very qualified and very talented girls that can run. I think some of them don’t realize it yet, what it takes to get the best out of them.”
A top returner for the Cowgirls is junior Mikayla Beisel, who qualified for state in four events (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, shuttle hurdles and high jump) last season, and included a seventh place finish in the high jump. Harker says Beisel is an anchor and motivator for the team.
“Mikayla, was a four event state qualifier last year, and we had a great group of seniors to go with her last year. Now, she’s the upperclassman and our mainstay of the team. She is already right where she left off from last year. I think she’s doing a very good job of trying to get the others motivated and be up to the task of what it takes to be successful in order to get the state.”
The Cowgirls first outdoor meet will be at Eagle Grove on Thursday, April 4th.
