Three Dike-New Hartford sports teams had events postponed Monday. The boys track & field meet at Cedar Falls was cancelled, the girls soccer game at Waterloo Columbus was rescheduled to Friday, April 5, and the girls tennis meet against Independence was rescheduled to Friday, April 5.
One Wolverine team will be in action Tuesday, as the girls track & field team travels to Jesup. It’ll be the second outdoor meet of the season for the Wolverines; they placed second at last week’s coed meet at Waverly-Shell Rock. With several returning state qualifiers in the open sprints and sprint relays, Head Coach Rachael Cheeseman says it’s a traditional area of strength that’ll carry into this season.
“We again will be another heavy, strong, deep team on the sprints,” Cheeseman says. “All those sprint relays, I think will be pretty solid. We like to talk about depth. It’s good if you have four girls to put together into a relay, but what’s even better is that you have four, five, six, seven girls that can kind of switch on and off. So I think we’ll see that again. This group of freshmen really seems like they’re really motivated. They’re coming off a great junior high experience in track and field and they are definitely motivated to come in and see what they can do.”
Cheeseman says two standout distance runners will round out the team and score additional points.
“Izzy Houts and Elise Folkerts, both on the distance races. They’ve been training over the winter and they’re ready to make sure that Dike New Hartford is not just sprints anymore. We want to make sure that we’re a well-rounded team. So I think there’s definitely a group of 800, 1500, 3000 meter girls that are excited to do that.”
The meet will begin at 4:30 p.m.
