The Grundy Center track & field teams will host an early bird coed meet Tuesday. The meet will feature a wide variety of teams. Conference foes will include AGWSR, Aplington-Parkersburg, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Hudson and Union. Non-conference teams will include Collins-Maxwell, Colo-Nesco, Waterloo Christian and Waterloo West.
It’ll be the first outdoor meet for the Spartan girls, who were scheduled to compete in the cancelled BCLUW Early Bird last week. Head Coach Todd Rohler on his early-season expectations.
“I want to get a gauge on where we’re at and that’s why it’s nice with the early bird meets and even our own coed meet,” Rohler says. “We’re gonna let kids compete. Some of those kids that maybe won’t get to run varsity live they’re still gonna be able to get on the track to answer some questions for us. So like the first two weeks of the season, you know some things already going into the season, but it’s a great place to start answering some questions about who the newcomers are and how they’re gonna mesh with everyone. So that’s my biggest hope, to just get some questions answered.”
It’ll be the second outdoor meet of the season for the Spartan boys, who had several first place finishes, including a team title, at last week’s meet at Belle Plaine.
Coming off team state titles, the Spartan golf teams will join East Marshall in triangulars hosted by BCLUW. The girls will look to make up for the graduation of last year’s top three golfers. Junior Leah Larson averaged 48.86 strokes per nine holes last year, and is the top returner.
The Spartan boys will be led by sophomore Judd Jirovsky, last year’s individual state champion, who enters with the best nine-hole average in Class 2A among returning golfers at 36.71.
The meets will start at 4:15 p.m. The boys will compete at South Hardin Recreation Area in Union, and the girls will compete at Oakwood Golf Course in Conrad.
