The Grundy Center golf teams began their seasons at triangulars at Jesup Thursday. The Spartan boys won with 164 strokes, Hudson was second at 169 and Jesup was third at 175. Judd Jirovsky was the individual champion with a par round of 36 strokes. Preston Martens was the runner-up with 38 strokes. The Spartan girls placed second with 213 strokes. Jesup won with 201 and Hudson was third at 247. The Spartans will return to action Monday at a triangular at Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
The Grundy Center tennis teams will both take on Nevada Friday. The girls will play at home and the boys will be on the road. Girls Head Coach Maddy Mahan says the team is ready for a meet after a long preseason leadup.
“Me and the girls are just excited to get out there and play, and with some great competition,” Mahan says. “Because there’s only so many drills and playing each other that you can do before it’s like you actually are out there and it’s like a different mentality.”
Seniors Bria Steinmeyer and Lilly Lewis played mostly #3 and #4 singles last year, and are some early favorites to take the top two varsity singles spots. Mahan says getting the underclassmen ready for action has been a point of emphasis.
“It’s a lot of the fundamentals. Like we have a lot of girls that it’s their first year going out and have the talent once they get that down. So, and it’s a lot of dusting all the rust off from people not picking up a racket in six months. So right now we’re just focusing on that and getting back into like the full swing of tennis while also just like growing as a team and as a unit together.”
Nevada is 1-0.
The Spartan boys are 0-1 after an 8-1 loss to Waterloo Columbus to begin the season. Nevada is 1-0. The girls will begin at 4:15 p.m. and the boys will begin at 4:30 p.m.
