Local student-athletes clinch, on the brink of Blue Standards

Three local student-athletes have achieved track & field Blue Standards, marks that automatically qualify them for the Drake Relays.

AGWSR’s Abby Veld has qualified in the discus with a mark of 135-11 at Thursday’s meet at Baxter, passing the automatic qualifying mark of 132-00.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Charlee Morton has qualified in the discus with a throw of 144-02 in Thursday’s Lady Bulldog Invite. She qualified for the shot put with a throw of 43-06 last week at Roland-Story, surpassing the qualifying mark of 41-0. Morton currently holds the best distances in both events among all classes in Iowa.

Iowa Falls-Alden’s Jaden Damiano has qualified in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.33, passing the qualifying time of 14.80.

Among student-athletes that are nearing automatic qualification, Dike-New Hartford’s Cameron Decker is within one second of the boys 100-meter dash qualifying mark of 10.85. DNH’s Macie Graves is less than a second away girls 100-meter dash qualifying mark of 12.45. The Dike-New Hartford girls 4×100-meter relay team of Shelby Ohrt, Chloe Paulsen, Kailyn Meester and Macie Graves is just over two seconds away from the qualifying mark of 51.00.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Gavin Meader is within one second of the boys 100-meter dash qualifying time. The Bulldog boys 4×100-meter relay team is less than one second away from the qualifying time of 43.50.

South Hardin’s Chizkiyah Richmond is within one second of the qualifying times in the boys 100 and 400-meter dashes.

Student-athletes must hit qualifying marks by 6:00 a.m. on Friday, April 19 to automatically qualify.
