Several Aplington-Parkersburg spring sports teams were in action Monday.
In a game that aired on 99 The Wave, the girls soccer team fell to Dike-New Hartford 2-0. The Wolverines got on the board with a Lucy Varney penalty kick early in the second half, and a long goal by Gentry Swarts doubled the lead a few minutes later. Head Coach Cory Goetsch says his team played strong defensively, highlighted by 25 saves by goalkeeper Emma Haan.
“I think our defense played really actually pretty well throughout the game,” Goetsch says. “They were playing tough, I thought our goalkeeper had some amazing saves throughout the game. She did a great job back there. As a whole, I thought our team was really in it playing hard against a really fantastic team. We need to get the ball probably down the field a little more and get some more shots, but as a whole, I thought defensively, we showed a lot of toughness out there.”
The Falcons are 3-2 and will host #9 (1A) Denver Tuesday.
In Fredericksburg, the AP/DNH boys soccer team beat Northeast Iowa United 10-0. AP/DNH scored six times in the first half, and ended the game early with four more in the second half. Ty Luhring led with three goals and three assists. AP/DNH is 6-1 and will host Clear Lake Friday.
The boys tennis team earned a 9-0 win at Iowa Falls-Alden. The Falcons got 8-0 sweeps by Tate Neymeyer at #1 singles, Grant Wedeking at #2 singles, Neymeyer/Tommy Janssen at #2 doubles and Gabe Jacobson/Keegan Bolhuis at #3 doubles. AP is now 1-2 and will be at Decorah Friday.
The Falcon girls tennis team lost 8-1 to Iowa Falls-Alden at home. The only win was by Adria Neymeyer, who won 8-3 at #1 singles. The 0-3 Falcons will return to action Tuesday at Dike-New Hartford.
The boys golf team opened the season with a 165-175 win at Denver. Jace Pruisner finished runner-up to lead the team by completing the round with 38 strokes. The Falcons will return to action Tuesday at a triangular hosted by Wapsie Valley at Maple Hills Country Club in Tripoli.
The boys track & field team placed third at East Marshall with 78 points. First place finishers: Kael Stotler in 100-meter dash and shot put, 4×400-meter relay, 4×800-meter relay. AP will return to action Thursday at Hudson.
In other Tuesday action, the Falcon girls track & field team will join a mix of NICL and out-of-conference opponents at the Hudson Girls Relays at 4:30 p.m.
