All four AGWSR spring sports teams will be in action Thursday.
The boys and girls golf teams will join Sumner-Fredericksburg in a triangular at Denver. The boys have a dual win and two second place triangular finishes under their belts so far, led by a 41.67 nine hole average by Gabe Nederhoff. Head Coach Ryley Schipper says the team has worked on maintaining patience in their shots.
“Not trying to overdo things,” Schipper says. “I think sometimes kids want to be able to hit it as far as the next guy, but you know, just playing your game, let what you do best show out. It’s very easy to get wrapped into, you know, the kid you’re playing with hits a 300, you only hit a 240 and saying, you know, you can’t compete, but can you hit the green on the next shot? Then can you eliminate the putts? Can you eliminate the strokes gained on things you don’t have to? So we really work on a lot of that stuff, hitting greens in regulation, eliminating the three putt, getting that down to a two putt. If you three putt every green and change that into a two putt every green, you just saved yourself nine strokes.”
The girls are coming off a third place finish at Tuesday’s triangular at Grundy Center. The meet will be held at Willow Run Country Club at 4:15 p.m.
The girls track & field team will compete at the Lady Wolverine Invitational at Dike-New Hartford. Senior Abby Veld, having already qualified for the Drake Relays in the discus, is seven and a half inches away from reaching the shot put Blue Standard of 41-0 and qualifying in that event for the third consecutive season.
“A lot of throwing is just technique,” Veld says. “Like you change the smallest thing and it can like take you from a 36 to like maybe a 40 and like vice versa honestly. But yeah it’s a lot of technique. Maybe like a little bit of strength but I’ve been working on that consistently.”
The meet will begin at 4:45 p.m.
The boys track & field team will compete at the Hudson Pirate Relays at 4:30.
