Clarksville Boys Track & Field being bolstered by field events

Clarksville boys track & field coach Darren Bohlen has a strong outlook for the team’s field events, saying it’s the team’s biggest strength.

Coming off a fourth place finish at last year’s state meet, senior Eli Schmidt has a season-best long jump of 20-11. Bohlen anticipates Schmidt can be among the best in Class 1A in that event.

“Eli jumped 21-2 last year, and in the first meet at Wartburg, he almost jumped 21,” Bohlen says. “So he’s a little bit further ahead than what he was last year. And I know he has a goal of trying to break 22. And I think if he can do that, that’s gonna be, I think, one of the leaders in Class 1A. So that’s definitely a strength.”

Schmidt is currently tied for the ninth-best long jump distance in Class 1A.

Sophomore Dawson Barnett currently holds the sixth-best shot put distance in Class 1A at 48-04.25.

“He threw 48 feet I believe at UNII already as just a sophomore. So he’s got the strength because he’s been in the weight room the whole time and he just works at it. He’s got great technique so and that’s probably three-fourths of the battle in that field event, is the technique and he’s got that down so hopefully we’ll see him break 50 this year.”

The Indians will return to action Tuesday at Dike-New Hartford.
