The Dike-New Hartford girls soccer team held off a comeback by GC-GR, winning 3-2 at home Thursday in a game that aired on 99 The Wave. Lucy Varney knocked in goals at the 29:38 and 24:07 marks of the first half, and it was 2-0 at halftime. Hanna Steffen scored her first goal of the season midway through the second half to make the advantage 3-0, but goals by Jada Blohm and Alex Yoder 90 seconds apart pulled the Rebels to within one with 10 minutes left. DNH Head Coach Emma Eden says a hot start on offense was the difference.

“At the beginning we were really pushing for offensive mindedness, we were really looking for some goals and they found it,” Eden says. “I think in the middle, starting the second half we tried a new formation with different people in different spots and it worked really well. It just got to the point where GCGR had a lot of tenacity and they were just finding people in the middle and we were just getting a little run down there that they found good opportunities GCGR did and they capitalized on it. So from there we made a switch and were able to lock down our defense to hold them there and we ended up holding it 3-2. So it worked out, but there are some more things we can work on in the future.”

The 5-2 Wolverines will return to action Friday at #5 (1A) Nevada at 6:00.
