The Hampton Police Department will host their first annual citizens academy next month at the council chambers.

The citizens academy will provide community members with an inside look into what the Hampton Police Department does. Police chief Mark Morrison tells Radio on the Go News attendees will be introduced to a range of topics on the department’s functions and operations.

“We’re super excited about getting the first annual Police Citizens Academy up and going here in our community. Some of the topics that we will go over in the Police Citizens Academy are traffic stops, search and seizure, OWI impairment, CPR, stop the bleed, also firearms training, and use of force simulator. The classes will be taught by Hampton Police Officers, Public Works, other city staff, wherever their course of knowledge is. We wanted to give the citizens of Hampton a little bit better understanding for the community to know what we do on a day-to-day basis.”

The five-week course will begin May 1st and Hampton Public Works Director, Doug Tarr, says they are looking for community involvement during the academy in May.

“Yeah, basically we’re gonna put on the code enforcement hat. I’ll be teaching some instruction basically on nuisance enforcement. As you know, that’s been a very hot topic in our community and the more information we can give our residents, the better, not only what they should be doing, but also as well as educating folks on what we actually do and how we respond to complaints or observations that we make throughout the community. So I’m looking forward to that instruction piece and just kind of looking forward to this first annual and we’re looking for some community support, yet community involvement. That’s never a bad thing.”

The classes will be held each Wednesday in May from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the council chambers. Attendees will need to fill out an application which can be picked up at the police department or can be found online at hamptonia.us.
