Six Aplington-Parkersburg spring sports teams will be in action Thursday.
The #8 (2A) AP/DNH boys soccer team has an opportunity for a statement victory when it hosts #5 (1A) GC-GR. At 9-3, the United will look to avoid consecutive losses, coming off a 4-1 loss at #8 (1A) Hudson Tuesday. Head Coach Perry Bernard says his team has among the best offenses in Class 2A.
“Between our mids and our forwards, when they come together, they work great together and they score a lot of goals” Bernard says. “Ty Luhring is number one in assists. I know Walker was up there in goals. Again, I feel like this season we have probably one of the deepest teams as far as front to back and how solid our mids are how solid our strikers are, how solid our defense is. This is our year. We feel like we can go to state and do something. That’s kind of our big goal right now. We’re taking one game at a time and we’ll go from there.”
Junior Ty Luhring leads Iowa with 25 assists. Senior Walker Weedman’s 19 goals are the sixth-most in Iowa. GC-GR won 3-1 when the teams met in Reinbeck in the season opener. It’ll start at 5:00 in Aplington.
At 5-6, the Falcon girls soccer team will look to get back to .500 in a rematch of the season opener, which they won 2-0. Freshman Kiara Morris has emerged as the team’s goal leader with seven. The Falcons will look to snap a two-game losing streak. GC-GR has lost four straight, including a 3-2 overtime loss to Union Monday. It’ll start at 5:00 p.m. in Reinbeck.
