Two local student-athletes will be in action at the Drake Relays Thursday. AGWSR senior Abby Veld and Hampton-Dumont-CAL junior Charlee Morton will compete in the girls shot put at 3:00 p.m.
Morton’s best throw of the season, 43-06.00, is the best in the field. She’s already surpassed last year’s throw of 43-03.50 that won the Drake Relays.
“I’m hoping to throw 45, 46, and I just got a new PR in the shot put, so I’m really excited to start off strong at the beginning of the season and knowing that I could throw my best at Drake Relays.”
Veld placed 10th at last year’s event, and has put in the necessary work to climb the leaderboard.
“You change the smallest thing and it can take you from a 36 to maybe a 40 and vice versa, honestly,” Veld says. “I want to get in the 42, 43 range.”
Veld’s best throw of the season, 40-08.00, ranks 11th in Iowa.
Both student-athletes will be in Flight 2.
