The Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls and boys track and field teams will contend for spots at the state meet at Class 3A state qualifying meet at Clear Lake on Thursday.
The Bulldogs girls return three events that qualified for state last year including state champion thrower Charlee Morton in the shot put and discus, and the shuttle hurdle relay team.
Girls Track and Field Coach Nicole Donnenwerth highlights some other top prospects for the Bulldogs in the chase to qualify for state.
“Lydia and her distance events,” says Donnenwerth. “We’re hoping for our shuttle hurdle team, we’re actually the third fastest in our district in the shuttle hurdle relay, but 10th fastest in 3A. Lily Hambly in a couple of individual events. Abby Drier is our strongest hurdler. Teaghan Bird in the 400 hurdles has come on this year, so she’s got a great shot in that.”
The Bulldog boys return state qualifiers Gavin Meader in the 100m and Scott Harr in the shot put and discus.
The HD-CAL boys 4x200m relay team of Gage Plagge, Carson Hisler, Tate Murray and Gavin Meader following conference title shared their pre-race mindset for state qualifying.
“Being healthy is when we’re being pretty good. Get our handoffs down and it just comes down to practice, we got to practice at 100%. I think coming into this, we have a mindset to kill everything in front of us, so we’re just going to attack every detail we got and finish strong as seniors. Obviously, we’re pretty familiar with the teams that are there. There’s a lot of great competition to push us. So just go out there, do what we can do. I fully believe that we’re capable of qualifying and being dangerous at the state meet.”
Field events begin at 4:00 p.m. Running events start at 4:45 p.m. Reports on the latest results will air on 104.9 KLMJ.
