Track & field state qualifying meets will be held Thursday.
Several local teams will compete at the Class 2A state qualifying meet at Dike-New Hartford, including Aplington-Parkersburg, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, South Hardin and the hosting Wolverines.
Among the several local favorites to advance to the state meet, the Aplington-Parkersburg girls 4×400-meter relay holds the best time in the district and fourth-best time in Class 2A. Junior Quinnlyn Schultz says the group knows it will advance if it performs to potential.
“Definitely just confidence in one another,” Schultz says. “It’s good to see so many teams around the area come together at the conference meet, and we know that a lot of these teams are gonna be at districts. And we definitely know where we’re sitting in Class 2A. So we just want to have confidence in each other because we’ve PR’d the last couple times so just again having confidence in one another and kind of having that mojo that we’re one of the best teams, so we should run like it and just do what we’re supposed to do.”
Grundy Center will be at the 2A meet at Denver. Coming off a conference title on Monday, boys head coach Chris Conger says it’ll be an opportunity to clinch another milestone for the program.
“It’s another stepping stone to a bigger challenge,” Conger says.” Obviously we have to put together some relays and we won’t individualize so much, but we’re going for six straight district titles and that’s never been done in school history and that’s that’s on our goal sheet. So we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
In Classes 2A and 3A, the top two placewinners in each event, plus the next best eight performances statewide will advance to the state meet. In Class 1A, those advancing to the state meet include the winner of each event and the next 14 best performances statewide.
Field events will begin at 4:00 p.m. and running events will start at 4:45.
