Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently signed a bill into law to update the Iowa code that determines the distribution of state aid for community colleges between Iowa’s 15 institutions.

Instead of the previous fixed formula, community college presidents and CEO’s will draft the formula each year, requiring agreement from 10 of the 15 leaders.

The bill outlines that each community college will maintain its current funding amount when the overall allocation is equal or greater than the previous year.

The Executive Director of the organization Community Colleges of Iowa, Emily Shields, says community college leadership are the most knowledgeable for responsibly handling the funds because they have the best understanding of how to do so effectively.

Iowa’s community colleges include Marshalltown Community College, Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, and North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.
