The Dike-New Hartford girls tennis team is one of the final four remaining teams in Class 1A after they defeated Central DeWitt in a first round state tournament dual Saturday. The Wolverines finished the dual in singles, winning 5-1 at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex in Iowa City.
Head Coach Reegan Zinkula on the team’s dedication, which helped them earn the program’s first ever state tournament appearance.
“It’s just an amazing feeling, not only for myself, I know the girls have worked so hard for this since the moment that they joined our tennis team,” Zinkula says. “This has always been a goal. And when you look at it compared to only having two classes in tennis, it’s a goal that you’re really gonna have to work hard to reach to get there. So being able to do that with this group of girls is just an amazing feeling. And they earned every single minute of it. It’s an awesome feeling.”
The Wolverines will next compete in the 1A semifinals on Wednesday, May 29 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. The semifinal pairings have not been announced by the IGHSAU.
