**Update: the game has been moved to Aplington at 7:00 p.m.**
The #7 (2A) AP/DNH boys soccer team is one win away from a state tournament appearance. They’ll host Center Point-Urbana in a 2A substate final Wednesday in Aplington.
AP/DNH continued its dominance with a 9-1 win over West Delaware in Monday’s substate semifinal, where the offense came alive and took advantage of many scoring opportunities. Junior Jackson Mulder says the well-roundedness of the team has contributed to one of the best offenses in Class 2A.
“I think it’s just all around, the defense gets it to us and our offense is just able to click,” Mulder says. “Obviously Ty Luhring is a big centerpiece in how that has been working really well this year, he’s leading a lot of the stats, assists and goals. So he’s been doing well this year and just all around, everybody works hard every day in and out of practice to work better as a team every game.”
Head Coach Perry Bernard on the opportunity to advance to the state tournament.
“We’ve had a lot of faith in these boys,” Bernard says. “These five seniors from DNH have been outstanding. They’ve been great as our defenders. We’ve got a really heavy defensive team with them. I’m really excited for the boys. You know, I’ve got those goals at the beginning of season, so we’re right on the edge of them, but we’ve got our work cut out for us. We’ve got a lot of stuff we need to clean up and try to finish that up Wednesday.”
The #2-seed in the bracket, Center Point-Urbana is 10-4. They advanced with a 5-1 win over Solon Monday, where they came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit. It’s been a low-scoring team, and no player has scored more than six times this season.
The game will air on 99 The Wave at 7:00 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:50 at Simons Field.
