Memorial Day Weekend is on the horizon, and for many Iowans, it marks the unofficial start of camping season. Those who partake in this summertime recreation are encouraged to follow a few safety and wellness tips.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Human Sciences Specialist Amy Jones of Cerro Gordo County says some steps should be taken to avoid food being contaminated.

“Keep your food out of the temperature danger zone of 40 degrees to 140 degrees,” Jones says. “Bacteria can multiply rapidly at those temperatures. If possible, use separate coolers for raw meat and ready-to-eat items. If they need to share a cooler, put the raw meat on the bottom, wrapped securely, and ready-to-eat foods above.”

Jones says bicycling is a popular activity among campers that can contribute to overall well-being.

“Health benefits include stronger muscles, better coordination, reduced body fat and lower stress. Bicycling is a lower-impact activity compared to running, and causes less stress on your feet, knees and hips.”
