Grundy Center senior Tanner Laube advanced to the semifinals and Aplington-Parkersburg senior Tate Neymeyer had his career come to a close at Day 1 of the Class 1A boys tennis singles & doubles state tournament at Byrnes Park.
Laube, the #3-seed, was dominant in his opening matches and didn’t give up a set. In the first round, he defeated Ben Van Gorp of Pella 6-2, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Bennett Link of Cedar Rapids Xavier 6-4, 6-3. He’ll play in the semifinals against Caden Branum of Decorah Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
Neymeyer, the #4-seed, had some close matches. In the first round, he defeated Easton Lubarski of Bishop Heelan 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, he fell 6-2, 0-6, 6-0 to Landon Murch of North Polk. His tournament ended in the consolation second round with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Mason Reicks of Kuemper Catholic.
