A local singles player and doubles team have advanced to Day 2 of the Class 1A Girls State Singles & Doubles Tennis Tournament in Iowa City. Both have the opportunity to place as high as fifth.
Aplington-Parkersburg junior Peyton Klooster opened with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Kaitlyn Zugay of Ballard. In her first consolation match, she defeated Lauren Ellis of Spencer 6-1, 6-4. She concluded her day with a 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win over Kaylie Simons of Kuemper Catholic. On Saturday morning, she’ll face Ishita Mukadam of Maharishi. The winner will play for fifth place and the loser will play for seventh place.
In doubles, Dike-New Hartford’s Izzy Norton/Aida Tott earned a 6-1, 6-4 first round win over Jocie Hobbs/Ellie Volkmann of Ballard. In the second round, they fell to Brooke Bloom/Isabelle Pierce of Central DeWitt 6-3, 6-2. In the consolation second round, they defeated Culee Smith/Abby Warning of Davis County 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 1-0 (10-7). They’ll open Saturday against Bryn Higginbotham/Claire Smock of Pella. The winner will play for fifth place and the loser will play for seventh place.
Dike-New Hartford senior Claire McCumber began her singles day with a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Jana Isanta Vila of Mount Pleasant. In the first round consolation, she defeated Saydie Roling of Central DeWitt 6-1, 6-3. Her tournament ended with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Mukadam of Maharishi.
Aplington-Parkersburg junior Adria Neymeyer fell in the first round to Mukadam of Maharishi 7-5, 6-3. Her tournament ended with a 6-2, 6-2 first round consolation loss to Kiana Schulz of Denison-Schleswig.
The South Hardin doubles team of Peyton Benson/Abby Teske opened with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Jersie Nitchals/Kennedy Paul of Estherville Lincoln Central. Their tournament ended in the first round consolation with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Smith/Warning of Davis County.
Saturday’s action will begin at 9:30 a.m.
