South Hardin earns softball sweep, baseball splits with Grundy Center Tuesday

The #9 (2A) South Hardin softball team swept Grundy Center at home Tuesday. The Tigers won 2-1 in Game 1 and 3-1 in Game 2. South Hardin won the first baseball game 8-4, and Grundy Center won Game 2 9-3.

The softball teams opened Game 1 with five scoreless innings on several putouts and sporadic walks and strikeouts. In the top of the sixth inning, Maddy Hendershot scored on an error to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Hailey Rosonke was walked home and Madison Stille drove in the go-ahead run to complete the scoring. Rosonke pitched the complete game and gave up one hit and one walk while recording four strikeouts. Maddy Hendershot pitched six innings and gave up three hits and five walks while recording three strikeouts.

In Game 2, the Tigers scored once each in the first, third and fifth innings. Rosonke drove in two of the runs on two doubles and Stille had the third RBI on a single. Carlie Willis drove in Hendershot in the sixth inning for Grundy Center’s only score. South Hardin’s Charlee Rosonke pitched the complete game and gave up two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Lucy Lebo pitched the complete game for the Spartans, giving up five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The Spartans (1-3, 0-2 NICL-W) will host #12 (2A) Jesup Wednesday. South Hardin (4-2, 2-0 NICL-W) will host Union Wednesday.

Grundy Center scored three in the top of the first inning in the first baseball game, but South Hardin answered with four in the bottom of the first. The Spartans added another in the second, but were unable to score any more runs. South Hardin came alive with four more runs with two outs in the fifth to complete the scoring.

In Game 2, Brody Zinkula, Judd Jirovsky and Tate Jirovsky each drove in runs and Ryker Thoren scored an unearned run to put Grundy Center ahead 4-0 after two innings. A Brayden Davie sacrifice fly scored Zinkula in the fifth, and the Spartans added four more in the sixth to close out the win. Tate Jirovsky pitched the complete game and recorded 13 strikeouts with five hits and one walk. Grundy Center (3-1, 2-1 NICL-W) will host Jesup Wednesday. South Hardin (1-2, 1-1 NICL-W) will host Union Wednesday.
