AP summer teams fall to Sumner-Fredericksburg Wednesday, travel to DNH Thursday

The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams both dropped home games to Sumner-Fredericksburg Wednesday. The baseball team lost 6-1 and the softball team fell 11-0 to the #8 (3A) Cougars.

In the baseball game, three two-run innings allowed the Cougars to pull away, doing their damage in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. The Falcons scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to mount a seventh inning comeback. They recorded three hits; one apiece by Wes Shirk, Devin Davis and Sully Janssen. Shirk pitched five innings and recorded one strikeout and two walks while giving up eight hits. Sully Janssen gave up two hits in two innings of relief. The Falcons (2-2, 2-1 NICL-C) will be at Dike-New Hartford Thursday at 7:00 p.m., a game that’ll air on 99 The Wave.

In the softball game, Sumner-Fredericksburg scored twice each in the first and third innings. However, the defense made clutch plays in those innings and stranded five baserunners. The Cougars pulled away in the late innings as the Falcons were unable to find gaps on batted balls. AP (2-2, 2-1 NICL-C) will play a doubleheader at Dike-New Hartford Thursday. Game 1 will start at 5:00 p.m.
