The South Hardin summer sports teams earned home wins over AGWSR in NICL-West action Friday. In a game that aired on 99 The Wave, the #8 (2A) Tiger softball team won 9-0 and the South Hardin baseball team won 10-8.
In the softball game, South Hardin’s first three runs were scored on bases loaded walks, with two coming in the second inning and one in the third. Later in the third inning, Charlee Rosonke and Hailey Rosonke hit back-to-back doubles that drove in two runs apiece to increase the margin to 7-0. The Tigers added one run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to cap the scoring. Head Coach Becky Rosonke was pleased with the offensive performance, scoring their most runs in a game this season.
“It was really great to see them come back from last night,” Rosonke says. “We took a pretty good beating last night, I would say. They had some great hitters on the St. Ed’s team. But to come back after that and then play like we did tonight, I’m very proud of them. They came with positive attitudes, stayed up the whole time. We finally scored more runs than we had been. We were kind of two or three here, three or four there. We finally strung some things together and made some stuff happen tonight.”
AGWSR threatened in the late innings with runners in scoring position, but was unable to capitalize. They also made strong defensive plays to work out of bases loaded jams and prevent the Tigers from winning in five or six innings. Head Coach Brock Holmgaard says freshman Leah Beving was serviceable in her first career pitching start.
“They all really fought hard and you know, Leah Beving, a freshman, first time starting pitcher against one of the best teams in 2A, I thought she did a really good job,” Holmgaard says. “A few too many walks, which is expected out of a freshman, but you know, they only had eight hits and they’re notoriously one of the best hitting teams in the state of Iowa every year between the Rosonke girls and Eller girls. So yeah, it was pretty impressive out of her.”
Beving gave up 10 hits with 10 walks and two strikeouts. South Hardin starter Hailey Rosonke gave up six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Alyssa Kix led the Tigers offensively with three hits and three RBI’s. Trevyn Smith had two hits to lead the Cougars. South Hardin (6-3, 3-0 NICL-W) will return to action Saturday at a tournament at Colo-Nesco. AGWSR (1-6, 0-3 NICL-W) will host #8 (3A) Sumner-Fredericksburg Wednesday.
In the baseball game, the Tigers used a seven-run fourth inning to take a 10-1 lead. In the fifth inning, AGWSR answered with five runs to get within 10-6. Bo Starr drove in a run in the seventh inning, followed by a score on a throwing error to cut the deficit to two, but the Tigers recorded the final out before the Cougars got any closer. AGWSR (1-6, 1-1 NICL-W) will host Gladbrook-Reinbeck for a doubleheader Monday. South Hardin (3-3, 2-1 NICL-W) will host a doubleheader with East Marshall Monday.
