The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams will continue their conference slate by playing doubleheaders at Hudson Monday.
At 2-3 and 2-2 in the NICL-Central, the baseball team will look to snap a two-game losing streak. They’ve been held in check offensively, scoring just one run in each of the last two games against Sumner-Fredericksburg and Dike-New Hartford. Head Coach Brett Kleespies says the team is built for a bounce back.
“Six games in five days, it’s heavy and so it’ll be baseball every other day or every day,” Kleespies says. “Just excited to have the team that we do. And by far, this is the team that’s kind of communicated the best that I’ve had in my six years. We have a bright future with this group. And so we’re excited for what’s to come. We’ll get over this little schneid that we’re on and come out better on the other side.”
Devin Davis has taken charge offensively with a team-high seven hits through the first five games, four of which are doubles. Hudson is 3-3 and 1-2 in conference play. They’ve won two straight, with wins over Oelwein and Denver to close last week. Nathan Rueber and Camden Davis have each batted over .400 this season.
At 2-4 and 2-2 in conference play, the Falcon softball team has lost three straight. They dropped both games of Thursday’s doubleheader at Dike-New Hartford and were shut out Wednesday by #8 (3A) Sumner-Fredericksburg. Avery Freund bats .529 for the season with a team-high nine hits. The Falcons lead the NICL with three home runs this season.
Hudson is 5-1 and 2-0 in conference play, with the only loss coming to Dike-New Hartford at their home tournament Saturday. Three players bat over .500, including Addie Rhoades, Laynee Oldenburger and Laiken Simerson. Hudson has won 17 straight in the series, a streak that began in 2016.
Both doubleheaders will begin at 5:00 p.m.
