The West Fork softball and baseball teams enter June in a good place to build, with a winning record and experienced leaders to help guide the teams through the heart of the season.
The West Fork softball team is 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Top of Iowa-East. The Warhawks top win in early action was a 9-1 upset of #9 (2A) Central Springs on May 29. Junior Libby Trewin, in the circle, is 4-3 with a 1.67 ERA and 76 strikeouts and leads the team with 8 RBI.
Head Coach Sadie Winfrey highlights the experience Trewin brings to the circle and the Warhawks clean up hitters.
“Trewin’s done a very good job once again at starting, she’s very confident, has a lot of different throws, a lot of movement,” says Winfrey. “She’s really done a great job, leads the defense, and she knows that she has good help behind her and they’ve shown that as well. I’ve been really impressed all the way through the lineup, just seeing different girls get different hits and their bat on the ball. When we get to three, four, five, you have Joanna Wallace, who is a tremendous hitter, followed by Libby, who is number four. Brooke Rother and then Brecken Dickman, can come up with some power as well.
The Warhawks will host North Butler on Wednesday and visit Nashua-Plainfield on Friday.
The West Fork baseball team is 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the Top of Iowa-East. The Warhawks’ leading arms are senior Edison Maske with a 2.86 ERA and junior Nolan Schreckengost with 1.24 ERA. Each are 2-0 on the hill. Zander Hansen leads the team with 9 RBIs.
Head Coach Kayden Ames says keeping it light outside of games and having fun are core in managing a busy stretch.
“Pitching-wise, with their arms, we’re not gonna overload them, especially early in the season, we’re gonna make sure that everything’s doing well and we’re good, because otherwise, it could hurt us in the long run,” says Ames. “Otherwise, just try to keep it, when we’re not in game or a tough situation, keep it light. We’re out there playing baseball, we’re having fun. When I was playing, it’s a long season. We gotta keep showing up every day and having fun because when we’re showing up every day and having fun, the season won’t feel as long when it comes down to the last few weeks.”
As part of a four-game week, the Warhawks will be at Osage on Monday, host North Butler Wednesday and Clarksville Thursday, and will visit Nashua-Plainfield on Friday.
