The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams went 2-2 in varsity doubleheaders at Hudson Monday. The baseball team swept the Pirates 2-1 and 5-1. The softball team was swept 11-1 (five innings) and 6-1.
In the first baseball game, the Falcons scored early and late to secure the win. They scored once each in the second and seventh innings. The Pirates got on the board in the fifth, but the Falcons held on in a defensive battle.
In game 2, the Falcons scored twice in the first inning, but the Pirates answered with their only run of the game in the bottom of the first. AP added one in the second and two more in the fifth to pull away and clinch the season series. AP (4-3, 4-2 NICL-C) will return to action Tuesday by hosting Grundy Center in a crossover game.
In the first softball game, AP struck first with their only run of the game in the top of the first inning. But Hudson’s offense heated up with four runs in the first inning, one in the second and five in the third. After a scoreless fourth, the Pirates added one run in the bottom of the fifth for the walk-off win.
In game 2, Hudson’s offense was similarly strong early, scoring twice in the first, once in the second and three times in the third. The Falcons got on the board in the top of the third, and the final four innings were scoreless as the Falcons held strong defensively. AP (2-6, 2-4 NICL-C) will be at Oelwein Wednesday.
