The AGWSR baseball and softball teams will host Sumner-Fredericksburg in NICL crossover games Wednesday.
The softball team is 1-6, and enters off a four-day stretch between games. In their last outing, the Cougars lost 9-0 at #8 (2A) South Hardin. It’ll be AGWSR’s second straight game against a ranked opponent; Sumner-Fredericksburg is ranked #8 in 3A. Head Coach Brock Holmgaard.
“Sumner-Fredericksburg is tough, they got a ton of team speed,” Holmgaard says. “Their coach is very open with stealing and he likes to run the bases hard. So that’s something we gotta prepare ourselves for, just making sure we’re getting the ball ahead of the runners. We’ll see what happens, hope for the best. And if we just keep improving every day, I tell the girls a lot, it doesn’t matter how good we’re playing right now, it only matters how good you’re playing at the end of the year.”
Trevyn Smith has proven to be one of the better hitters in the NICL-West and bats .429 to lead the team.
Sumner-Fredericksburg has been dominant, leading the NICL in runs scored. A powerful batting lineup includes two players over .600, led by Isabel Bernard at .615 with 24 hits.
The AGWSR baseball team will be in search of their second straight win. At 2-7 and 2-2 in conference play, they’re coming off a doubleheader split with Gladbrook-Reinbeck Monday, where they lost 16-1 in five innings in game 1, but bounced back for a 14-10 win in game 2. In the win, they racked up a season-high 15 hits, with three apiece by Kaden Abbas and Remington Kerns.
Sumner-Fredericksburg enters with an impressive batting lineup with two players that bat over .500, led by Jaymison Howard’s .560 average. The team average of .338 leads the NICL.
Both games will start at 7:00 p.m.
