The Dike-New Hartford summer sports teams will play at South Hardin Wednesday in NICL crossover games.
The Wolverine baseball team enters off a 7-2 home loss to Grundy Center Monday, which pushed their record to 5-2 and 3-1 in conference play. In need of a bounce back, Head Coach Jordan Martin says a veteran team has the program moving in the right direction.
“Defensively, we put guys in positions where they’re going to make plays,” Martin says. “A lot of guys stepped up. We have a couple of young guys that are helping us in the basepaths. So just a complete team right now, just playing together, honestly. We got a couple of leaders up there in the upperclassmen that are just tremendous to work with and have really powered our team for the season so far.”
Junior Carson Costello has put the league on notice by racking up 15 hits in 25 at-bats for a .600 average. He also leads the team with two home runs and nine RBIs.
South Hardin has bounced back from a slow start to win four straight games, including some high-scoring games with AGWSR and South Hamilton. At 5-3 and 4-1 in the NICL-West sophomore Peyton Welch has a team-high 13 hits and bats .382.
At 7-2 and 3-1 in the NICL-Central, the Wolverine softball team has won six straight games, including a dominant 8-0 performance against Grundy Center Monday. Madde Buskohl and Faith Gray have each batted over .500 for the season.
#8 (2A) South Hardin started hot, but has lost three straight. At 7-6 and 3-2 in conference play, they need a win to stay above .500 and keep their ranking intact. They’ll look to rely on the strength of senior pitcher Hailey Rosonke, who has issued just five walks in 58.2 innings pitched.
Both games will start at 7:00 p.m.
