The North Butler softball and baseball teams will travel to West Fork for a midweek Top of Iowa-East series opener on Wednesday.

The 0-7 North Butler softball team enters off one of their better outings of the season, holding #10 (2A) Jesup to five runs in a 5-2 loss on Tuesday. Zoey Thompson leads the Bearcats with seven hits.

Bearcat Head Coach Austin Guerrero says the team has done a good job of buying into the overall goal of coming together.

“I think our mindset is going to be a big thing for us,” says Guerrero. “We’re just inexperienced at the varsity level, and that’s a positive thing for us, because some of our girls don’t know what to expect. We’re learning on the fly. I think that our girls have done a great job of buying into what our overall goal of coming together as one team. Each day just keep putting your best foot forward, your best effort, and things will come together when it matters most.”

The 4-4 West Fork softball team, in their last outing, lost 3-2 to Osage on Monday. The Warhawks are led by ace pitcher junior Libby Trewin, with a 1.74 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 52 ⅓ innings.

The game will air on 104.9 KLMJ with pregame coverage at 5:50 p.m. followed by the first pitch at 6:00 p.m. in Sheffield.

The 1-5-1 North Butler baseball team lost 7-2 to Nashua-Plainfield on Monday. Sophomore Brody Wangsness leads the team with seven hits and 15 ⅔ quality innings on the hill with a 0.89 ERA and 41 strikeouts.

The 5-5 West Fork baseball team fell 14-2 to Osage in five innings on Monday. The Warhawks’ pitching staff has received a lift from the duo of Senior Edison Maske and Junior Nolan Schreckengost.

Warhawk Head Coach Kayden Ames says Maske and Schreckengost have stepped up and challenged hitters.

“Eddie and Nolan both right now are leading us in innings, and have thrown really well for us,” says Ames. “It really comes down to throwing strikes, let our guys run around and make plays. If we throw strikes, we’re going to be in a good position as long as we’re making plays. Eddie’s done a great job with that. Nolan is another one that it’s a one-on-one battle against the batter and he wants to get that batter out, he’s a competitor.”

Maske leads the team with 18 strikeouts and Schreckengost has a team-low 1.24 ERA.

The first pitch is at 7:30 p.m.
