Falcons sweep Union in softball and baseball Thursday

The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams both defeated Union Thursday at home. The softball team won 10-4 and the baseball team won 9-2.

In the softball game, the Falcons heated up in the second with three runs on hits from Eva Walker and Avery Freund to take a 4-0 lead. After Freund drove in another run in the fourth, Walker and Kendall Riherd combined to bat three runs in for an 8-1 lead. Union cut the deficit to 8-4 in the top of the sixth, but the Falcons responded with RBIs by Sophia Junker and Walker in the bottom of the sixth. AP (3-7, 2-4 NICL-C) will be at Belmond-Klemme Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Broncos knocked the Falcons out of the playoffs last season.

In the baseball game, the Falcons scored twice in the first inning, followed by four in the second on RBIs by Devin Davis, Tate Neymeyer and Preston Janssen for a 6-0 lead. Davis and Nick Neuroth drove in runs in the third to extend the lead to 8-0. Union scored twice in the fourth, but the Falcons added one insurance run in the sixth to finish the win. Neymeyer pitched the complete game with six hits, one walk and three strikeouts. AP (6-3, 4-2 NICL-C) will be at Wapsie Valley Friday at 7:00 p.m.
