The AGWSR baseball team earned two much-needed wins at a tournament at North Tama Saturday. The Cougars defeated the hosting Redhawks 5-1 and beat Maquoketa Valley 4-3.
In the North Tama game, the teams opened with five scoreless innings. But the Cougars struck first with two runs in the top of the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away. North Tama threatened with one run in the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars manufactured runs with four stolen bases. Landen Dennis led offensively with one hit and two RBIs. Bo Starr pitched the first six innings with two hits allowed, four strikeouts and three walks.
Against Maquoketa Valley, the teams were scoreless through the first four innings. AGWSR took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats answered with three in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, the Cougars added three more to take the lead for good. Carter Roder and Remington Kerns each had two hits. Landon Benning and Trace Eiten each drove in two runs. Ryne Pickering pitched five innings with 11 hits allowed, four strikeouts and three walks.
AGWSR (4-9, 2-3 NICL-W) will return to action Monday by hosting South Hardin for a doubleheader. The Tigers won 10-8 when the teams met earlier this season.
