East Marshall wins three of four against Grundy Center Tuesday

The Grundy Center summer sports teams went 1-3 at home against East Marshall Monday in NICL-West doubleheaders. The baseball team won 9-0 and lost 6-5. The softball team was defeated 4-1 and 14-2.

In the first baseball game, the Spartans carried a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning, where they tripled their lead with four runs scored. They added another three in the fifth. Pete Lebo led with two hits, including a triple. Judd Jirovsky and Brayden Davie each drove in two runs. Tate Jirovsky pitched 4.2 innings with eight strikeouts, no walks and two hits.

In the second baseball game, the Spartans scored once in the first, and twice each in the third and fourth. East Marshall cut the deficit to one with four runs in the sixth, and they carried their momentum into the seventh, where they scored the two winning runs. Brody Zinkula and Hayden Geerdes each had two hits. Zinkula had a double and drove in two runs. The Spartans used four pitchers; Ryker Thoren pitched five innings with five strikeouts, two walks and one hit. Grundy Center (7-5, 4-3 NICL-W) will host Waterloo Columbus Wednesday.

In the first softball game, #11 (2A) East Marshall scored once in the second and three times in the fourth. The Spartans got on the board with one run in the sixth. Grundy Center was held to four hits, with the RBI coming from Lucy Lebo. Ava Mundt pitched the complete game with three strikeouts, three walks and nine hits.

In the second softball game, the Mustangs started hot with three runs in the first inning. The Spartans got their only runs in the third to cut the deficit to 4-2. East Marshall added four runs in both the fourth and seventh innings to run away with the win. Carlie Willis and Lebo each had one hit and one RBI. Lebo’s hit was a double. Maddy Hendershot pitched the complete game with two strikeouts, five walks and 10 hits. Grundy Center (6-10, 1-5 NICL-W) will host Waterloo Columbus Wednesday.
