Grundy Center Softball loses on walk-off home run at Denver

The Grundy Center softball team fell 7-6 at Denver Thursday. The baseball game between the schools was cancelled.

The Cyclones scored twice each in the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Spartans responded with six runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Kyndra Dieken drove in two runs. Maddy Hendershot, Carlie Willis, Lucy Lebo and Ava Heeren each had one RBI in the inning. But Denver’s Malea Gonnerman hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. The Spartans had seven hits, all singles. Ava Mundt pitched the complete game with four strikeouts, two walks and nine hits. Grundy Center (10-12, 3-6 NICL-W) will return to action at a tournament at Marshalltown Saturday.
