The AGWSR softball team had a productive offense, but North Butler rallied late to secure a 14-8 win in Ackley Friday in non-conference action.

North Butler scored three in the first inning for an early lead. But AGWSR took a 4-3 lead in the second when Trevyn Smith hit a grand slam, the first of her career. A Grace Pittenger RBI single tied the game in the top of the third. In the fourth, Marcy Allan drove in a run, followed by Kamri Groen and Allan scoring on passed balls for a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, AGWSR’s Ella Diemer drove in a run to cut the deficit to 7-5. In the top of the fifth, Izzy O’Dowd gave North Butler an 8-5 lead by scoring on an errant throw to the outfield. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars cut the deficit to 8-7 with an RBI double by Smith and RBI groundout by Diemer. North Butler batted around in the top of the seventh, where they scored six runs to seal the win.
AGWSR coach Brock Holmgaard.

“It’s kind of the same thing that’s happened to us all year, we play pretty good, and then a couple of things go wrong for us, and we start giving up free bases,” Holmgaard says. “And then all of a sudden, we’re throwing the ball down the middle of the plate. And then they get some timely hits and score a bunch of runs. And then we kind of let things snowball there for a while. And that’s just kind of the way the season’s been. It’s always been one inning that was really hard on us. So hopefully, we can get that squared away here Monday night.”

AGWSR (2-25) will host Iowa Falls-Alden Monday. North Butler (4-18) will be at Hudson Tuesday.
