AGWSR sweeps Iowa Falls-Alden in baseball and softball

The AGWSR summer sports teams both defeated Iowa Falls-Alden at home Monday. The Cougar softball team won 9-6 and the baseball team won 14-12.

In a back-and-forth baseball game, AGWSR took control with four runs in the first, three in the second and seven in the third for a 14-1 lead. After scoring one in the top of the third, the Cadets answered with eight in the top of the fourth. The fifth inning was scoreless, and the Cadets cut the deficit to two with two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Iowa Falls-Alden (4-16) will be at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. AGWSR (7-18) has ended the regular season on a three-game win streak and will next compete in Saturday’s district quarterfinal against Colo-Nesco.

In the softball game, the Cougars scored twice each in the first, fourth and sixth innings, and scored three in the third for a well-rounded win. Iowa Falls-Alden got to within 7-6 with four runs in the fifth. Claire Culver had three hits to lead AGWSR, while Quinn Holmgaard had two hits. Brylea Metzgar pitched the complete game with two strikeouts, six walks and eight hits. Alivia Tupper, Lauren Wood and Addison Vanderloop each had two hits to lead the Cadets. Cidni Phipps pitched four innings with one strikeout, two walks and six hits. AGWSR (3-25) will be at Dunkerton Wednesday to conclude the regular season. Iowa Falls-Alden (7-15) will be at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
