The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams both picked up thorough wins Wednesday. At home, the baseball team beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck 9-1. The softball team won 12-2 in five innings at South Tama.

In the baseball game, the Falcons scored two in the first inning via a balk with a runner on third, followed by an RBI double by Devin Davis. In the fourth, Jaxson Kleespies hit an RBI single, and Gabe Jacobson and Wes Shirk scored on passed balls. Later in the inning, Tate Neymeyer and Sully Janssen drove in runs for a 7-0 lead. In the fifth, Jacobson drove in a run and Preston Janssen had a sacrifice fly for a 9-0 lead, but the Falcons stranded the winning run on base. The Rebels scored in the sixth, but the Falcons finished off the win in the seventh. Davis says it was a quality outing to end the regular season.

“Definitely played strong all season, and that’s a good way to end it here on Senior Night,” Davis says. “I’m proud of our team. The bats are hot right now and I’m ready to get into the postseason for sure.”

With 14 strikeouts, Davis was the winning pitcher, and tied the program record for career pitching wins with 16.

“It’s very cool, but I definitely couldn’t have done it without my team. Definitely the defense, they’re just always encouraging me in the dugout and I just couldn’t do without them. So thank you to them.”

Tate Neymeyer had three hits, including two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. AP has finished the regular season at 15-7 and will begin the postseason in the district semifinal on Tuesday, July 9 against either Grundy Center or Union.

In the softball game, the Falcons got on the board in the top of the first with a grand slam by Jordan Trueblood, and Kendall Riherd hit a three-run homer in the fifth to complete the scoring. They scored another five runs in between to help secure the win, which was the second straight that ended in five innings. Aubrey Williamson pitched four innings with three strikeouts, two walks and four hits. It clinched the program its first double-digit win season since 2013. AP (10-12) will close the regular season Monday at Jesup.
