The AGWSR softball team will begin the playoffs Monday with a chance to extend a season-long win streak. The Cougars will play at Northwood-Kensett in a 1A Region 2 first round game on 99 The Wave.
AGWSR (4-25) closed the regular season with a 9-6 win over Iowa Falls-Alden and a 10-8 win over Dunkerton, the first instance of consecutive wins. Having racked up 10 or more hits in three straight games, Head Coach Brock Holmgaard says the defense has also stepped up.
“The girls are doing a better job throwing strikes when we need them, making the other team hit the ball, making our defense make the plays for them rather than just giving up a ton of free bases,” Holmgaard says. “We’ve cut down the free bases a ton, so that’s helped tremendously as far as getting the wins in the last couple games here. And really like hitting the ball, you know, giving the pitchers a lot of run support so they don’t feel like they have to hold them to three or less runs helps, I think, a bunch.”
Northwood-Kensett (4-18) will look to snap a six-game losing streak. They ended the regular season with Monday’s 11-1, five-inning loss at Lake Mills. The team bats .223, with only one player, eighth grader Bailey Thorson, batting over .300.
The teams last met in the 2022 playoff opener, won 18-0 in three innings by the Cougars.
The game will air on 99 The Wave with coverage beginning at 6:40 p.m. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00. The winner will advance to Wednesday’s regional quarterfinal at #4 (1A) St. Edmond.
