The AGWSR softball team trimmed a nine-run deficit to three in the seventh inning, but fell 10-7 at Northwood-Kensett in a 1A Region 2 first round game that aired on 99 The Wave Monday.

The Vikings scored one on a passed ball in the second, and with a two-run home run in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. An error in the sixth inning allowed the Cougars to get to within 3-1, but the Vikings pulled away with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Cougars loaded the bases, followed by Tori Metzgar being hit by a pitch to score the inning’s first run. Catelynn Koop walked with the bases loaded, and Trevyn Smith drove in a run to get within 10-4. Two runs scored when Ella Diemer reached on an error, and Quinn Holmgaard drove the next pitch to right field to get within three. Claire Culver hit a line drive toward right field, but it was caught by the second baseman to end the game. Head Coach Brock Holmgaard.

“The sixth inning there, it’s kind of the story of our season, just kind of snowballed on us,” Holmgaard says. “And we just couldn’t get out of our funk there for a little bit until they hit a lazy fly ball or a lazy pop-up to the catcher so we could get out of that inning. Just one of those things. Once it starts rolling, we’ve been having trouble stopping it all year.”

Quinn Holmgaard, Cali Buseman and Brylie Henze each had one hit. Brylea Metzgar pitched the complete game with seven walks, seven strikeouts and seven hits.

AGWSR’s season ends at 4-26.
