Grundy Center Softball pulls off upset of #2 Alburnett in regional quarterfinal

The Grundy Center softball team pulled off possibly the upset of the season in Iowa High School Softball Wednesday, knocking off #2 (2A) Alburnett 8-6 in a 2A Region 6 quarterfinal on the road.

The Spartans scored twice in the first inning to lead early, and eventually stretched the lead to 8-0 heading into the seventh. Alburnett started a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scored six runs with no outs, and cut the deficit to two before the Spartans recorded the final out.

Maddy Hendershot led with three hits, including a double and two RBIs. Evelyn Geerdes had two hits, a double and two RBIs. Carlie Willis was hitless but drove in a run. Hendershot pitched six innings with four strikeouts, three walks and seven hits.

Grundy Center (12-17) has advanced to Friday’s regional semifinal against West Fork.
