The Iowa Falls-Alden softball team ran out of steam defensively, and fell 12-2 in six innings to #14 (3A) West Marshall in a 3A Region 5 quarterfinal Thursday in State Center, as aired on 99 The Wave.
The Trojans scored one in the first and two in the second for a 3-0 lead, though the Cadets had sporadic hits to stay within striking distance. In the fourth, Lillian Fischer hit a grand slam to widen the margin, which was followed by a base hit that drove in two more runs. The Cadets scored once each in the fifth and sixth innings on RBIs by Joslin Johnson and Erica Baker. Needing three runs in the sixth to end the game via the runs-ahead rule, the Trojans accomplished it with two outs.
Addison Vanderloop led the Cadets with two hits. Cidni Phipps pitched the complete game with no strikeouts, five walks and seven hits. Iowa Falls-Alden ends its season at 8-17.
