The Aplington-Parkersburg baseball team will get another shot at #1 (2A) West Marshall when the teams meet in Saturday’s 2A District 3 final in State Center. The Falcons hung close in a 7-5 loss to the Trojans late in the regular season.
The Falcons (16-7) enter the matchup after beginning the postseason with Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Grundy Center in the district semifinal. The Falcons scored all their runs in the first three innings and held strong defensively. Head Coach Brett Kleespies looks forward to having another chance to contend with one of Iowa’s best teams.
“Baseball is a funny thing and we played West Marshall a couple weeks ago and Coach Brown’s got a good team in West Marshall,” Kleespies says. “They’re going to throw hard and hit the ball so we got to be ready to go. It’s good to be in back to back district finals, to have that opportunity. These five seniors have done what they needed to do to get themselves there and the younger guys along with them.”
West Marshall (34-2) were tested in Tuesday’s 2-1, eight-inning win over Hudson, where ace pitcher Owen Siegert threw the maximum number of pitches in seven innings. They were held to just four hits, including two by Grayson Shaver.
The game will start at 7:00 p.m. and will air on 99 The Wave with coverage beginning at 6:40. The winner will advance to Tuesday’s substate final in Marshalltown against either Roland-Story or Dike-New Hartford.
