A 45-year-old Clarion man was sentenced Monday to over four years in federal prison after he entered a guilty plea to possessing a firearm by a prohibited person.
Michael Dean Hanus, Junior was previously convicted of interference with official acts-dangerous weapon, which prohibits a person from possessing a firearm.
Evidence showed that in October of last year, law enforcement in Wright County were investigating elder abuse. During the investigation, law enforcement received information that Hanus possessed an AR-15 style rifle at his father’s residence in Humboldt. An agent seized an HDR-15 rifle from Hanus, and later determined that the firearm was stolen.
Hanus admitted to possession of the firearm, including his knowledge of his previous felony conviction, which prohibited his possession of any firearm. Evidence also showed that he had 10 previous convictions for assault based conduct over the past 20 years.
Hanus was sentenced to 52 months in prison. There is no parole in the federal system.
