Franklin County Conservation is offering tips to stay safe while camping during times of inclement weather.

Park Ranger/Naturalist Thomas Rice says to watch out for signs of flash flooding.

“If you’re planning to camp or hike near a stream or river, remember that it doesn’t have to rain directly over you for there to be flooding,” Rice says. “If you even notice a slight rise in water level, seek higher ground immediately. Know the signs of an impending flash flood, rising water levels and/or stronger currents, increasing roar of water up canyon or up river, floating debris, or sudden changes in water from clear to muddy.”

Rice says along with proper hydration, a proper diet when being outside in high heat is helpful.

“Eat light, cool, easy to digest foods such as fruits or salads. If you pack food, put it in a cooler or carry an ice pack. Don’t leave it sitting in the sun. Meats and dairies spoil quickly in the hot weather.”
