Hampton-Dumont-CAL four-time state champion and junior thrower Charlee Morton completed a statement season in the circle at the USATF National Junior Olympics in College Station, Texas on July 25 and 26. Morton placed sixth in the discus with a distance of 142 ’11” and fourth place in the shotput with a throw of 44′ 1”.
Morton says it was cool to interact with other athletes and that she was mentally locked in.
“It was cool just talking to people from different states, seeing their work ethic and knowing that they worked really hard to get here,” says Morton. “It was a really great competition. Coming in for discus, I was in the third flight, not the fourth flight. I knew I had to get a big mark to make it to finals. I stayed calm that whole time and threw that big mark. Having a good mindset really helped me get into finals.”
Morton, in addition to track and field, plays volleyball, basketball and softball.
Morton says being part of multiple sports helps with throwing and is looking forward to her senior year.
“I definitely like staying busy. I think a really big thing that has helped me in the ring is just playing every sport because it’s really big about the technique. You also need to be light on your feet, which I feel like volleyball and basketball help. Softball helps with the hips and all that explosive work. I enjoy doing all of them. I’m really glad that I can finish with all the sports for my senior season.”
Morton will kick off her senior season with HD-CAL volleyball this fall.
