ISU Extension provides healthy food suggestions for state fair attendees

The Iowa State Fair is less than one week away. Iowa State University Extension Human Sciences Specialist Amy Jones offers suggestions for those looking for healthy food options.

“While having the classic fair treat is part of the fun experience, there are also healthy choices to consider,” Jones says. “Things like grilled corn on the cob. This delicious option combines the sweetness of fresh corn with smoky flavors from the grill. Fruit kebabs. Fresh fruit on a stick provides a refreshing and vitamin packed snack. Salad wraps. Look for vendors offering wraps filled with leafy greens, grilled chicken, and colorful vegetables. Also try smoothies. These are drinks made with real fruit and no added sugars. Or yogurt parfaits. These layers of yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit create a balanced and satisfying treat.”

The state fair is from Thursday, August 8 through Sunday, August 18.
