The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows softball team will look for improvement this offseason following a 2-21 record in 2024.
The Cowgirls recorded wins over West Hancock and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura.
Head Coach Jill Stanton says the team learned from challenges and will look to come back stronger.
“The girls felt uplifted and supported by our community every game,” says Stanton. “Not every game went our way, but we learned from every mistake. We learned from every error. We learned, what it takes to be a good softball team. At the end of the season, even though we lost, we had girls still wanting to keep playing and wanting to do more. That was our goal, we want the love of the game back. We want to look to the future and hopefully next year we see a stronger team.”
All-conference sophomore pitcher Tess Wibholm will return as a leader in the circle after recording 89 strikeouts in 82 innings.
Stanton says increasing hitting is part of their offseason to-do list.
“We’re bringing in a hitting coach this fall to try to bump up their speed at the bat, shorter swings and making contact, a lot of it is just mental preparation. We need to put it in play and less strikeouts and make the other team work to get us out. We’re working in that area to increase our hitting because we have to with this conference that we’re in, we have to put the ball in play more.”
Freshman players Quinn Brooks with a .256 avg and Blaire Askelsen with a .234 avg will look to help rally the offense next year.
C-G-D, after graduating senior captains Paige Brooks and Nyla Wibholm, are projected to return 17 players.
